How to pay yourself a wage

Do you feel like you pay yourself enough in your business for everything you do?

Confession: For the first three years I was in business I didn’t pay myself appropriately. I just took money out willy-nilly when I needed to cover a bill (or maybe buy myself a new pair of shoes 😉).

I was working my butt off, don’t get me wrong, but I just wasn’t paying close attention to the money going in and out. I was so focussed on growing the business and creating incredible experiences for the students in our dance school and that just soaked up all of my attention.

As long as I had money in the bank to buy the new tutus, pay my staff and cover the bills… everything was hunky dory… right? WRONG

Not having money to pay yourself is the biggest kick in the pants to switch your brain on to all of the “money matters” in your daily operations. I now know that paying myself in my business is actually the first step in being a financially responsible business owner.

Without that wage and “reward” for all of your hard work, you’re on a fast track to BURNOUT. Without the financial payoff, you’ll run out of passion, energy and adrenaline. I know, because that’s what happened to me.

If I had my time over, I’d pay myself a wage from DAY 1 in business.

You can listen more to my conversation on this topic in this podcast episode.
