The 5 best things I did for my business in 2023

As we wave goodbye to 2023, I've been diving deep into a bit of reflection. It's been a year of growth, challenges, and some pretty epic wins – both personally and professionally. And let me tell you, the crossover between the two has been eye-opening!

In this blog post, I'm excited to share with you the top 5 things I did for my business this year.

1. I decided to be less hands-on with my team.

Yep, I took a step back… and it was a bit of an adjustment for everyone. They were used to me being all up in the details, sometimes a bit too much (guilty as charged for micromanaging!). But this year, I took the 'You've got this!' approach and we set up regular catch-ups instead of me just diving in to save the day at any moment.

It was a bit of sink or swim, and there were some learning curves, but the results were SO good. My team really stepped up. They figured out what they love (and don't love) about their roles, and even came up with some awesome ideas to re-jig things so they could spend more time working in their zone of genius.

The best part was that they've built amazing relationships with our customers and taken full ownership of their work.

Stepping back, empowering my team and cutting out my micromanaging was the #1 thing I did for my business this year.

2. Got clear on my financial goals

A few years back, we bought an investment apartment off the plan, and 2023 was D-Day – it was finally ready. It meant getting strategic with my business income, ensuring my wage was consistent and aligned with our family goals. No more 'let's try this and see' approach. Every decision had to count towards success.

It was tough but worth it. We've been laser-focused on customer acquisition and hitting targets. And the payoff? Our apartment is ready, and we're spending Christmas there!!!!

3. Worked on myself

I had this huge lightbulb moment this year that self-care wasn’t just about relaxation. It was about caring for myself. So I redefined self-care. It meant consistent therapy, regular exercise, and those little daily practices that help me show up as my best self. I dove deep into building connections with my kids, playing LEGO, reading books, asking questions – all that good stuff. Because when I care for myself, my business thrives.

It paid off big time. My accountant called me around August to say I'd already hit my year-end goals! I'm convinced it's all thanks to the work I’d been doing on myself with the help of the wonderful Alli Garison

If you're hesitant about self-care, take it from me – it's worth it. It's not just good for you; it's great for your business too.

4. Said yes to more speaking opportunities

So this one’s a bit more ego based but getting to speak on stage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas was a total highlight for me this year. I was surrounded by great friends and people that I admired in my industry and the opportunity to stand on stage and do what I love and share my message was just unbelievably cool.

In terms of the best things that I've done for my business, it would be that I said yes to more speaking opportunities, even though it meant more travel and more time away from home. The result was a huge boost to my brand awareness and forced me to get clear on my message and how I can bring value to my audience.

5. Aligning my business and personal goals.

After turning 40, I had this moment of clarity about what success really means to me. This year, at 41, I fully embraced making choices based on what I truly wanted, not just what I thought I should be doing.

It's been a game-changer. I used to think sacrificing personal time for my business was the only way forward. But it turns out, focusing on personal goals – like quality time with my kids, friends, and family – has actually made my business grow the most.

It might sound counterintuitive, but when I'm working, I'm super focused and productive. And when I'm off, I'm genuinely resting and recharging. This balance has been a huge win for both my personal life and my businesses and I highly recommend it!
